Top Tier C-Store chains are preserving penetration in traditional c-store categories –snacks, candy, packaged beverages, alcohol, gas – achieving penetration similar to 3rd Tier C-Store chains.

Blurring lines and investing in the future haven’t eroded that core. They are driving success in greater perishable/refrigerated penetration – the territory of traditional grocery – and the meal trip province of QSRs.

Where Top Tier C-Stores fall behind 3rd Tier are in cigarette, other tobacco products (OTC), lottery, and ATM. 3rd Tier C-Stores have higher penetration in lottery/ATM than meal penetration, for instance, representing their adherence to what has helped contribute to their market rise but vulnerability to what will help contribute to their market fall, if things don’t change.
