Market Context

Format Trends, Past 10 Years

Source: Flywheel

The past 10 years in the U.S. grocery market have been characterized by two contextual shocks, which have in turn influenced customer behaviors: Covid and Inflation. These shocks had three primary outcomes on the competitive landscape:

  1. The continuation of the decline of the Supermarket format market share
  2. An acceleration of the increase in market share of the Club/Cash & Carry format
  3. A step-change in penetration of the online channel

Of course, not all retail banners within formats are created equal. Some have fared better, and some have fared worse, than the general trend for these formats. In this report, we’ll reveal which retailers have a customer value proposition that is best built for long-term growth, not just growth in the past few years. Perhaps more importantly, we’ll answer why, by dissecting customer needs and identifying those most critical in meeting for long-term retailer success.
